With the summer winding down, Hollywood is in that mode that always seems to come after all the summer blockbusters are over, and before they float their Oscar contenders...hum-drum blah movies are filling up the theaters with nothing to really look forward to. Until now...King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters is a documentary on one man's quest to beat the Donkey Kong world record. It looks like it has everything. The loser striving to make good (Steve Weibe, father and schoolteacher who is the current Donkey Kong record holder), a villain, determined to hold onto his waning power (Billy Mitchell, the prior Donkey Kong record holder, and "Video Game Player of the Century"...seriously) and a head-to-head match-up complete with referees, fans and a cast of characters that look like they could be pulled directly from Napoleon Dynamite.
The whole thing almost looks like it could almost be a hoax. These people couldn't really exist, could they? The movie looks too entertaining. Too perfect. I can't wait to see it!
